Description

Just like the rugs I make, these cushions are 100% sheep-friendly, no sheep are harmed in the process of making them.  They are made from only felted wool which is then sewn onto a linen back.  They are very soft and cuddly, just like our sheep in fact!

To make these cushions I use up the left-over locks of wool from my rug making.

I’ve written a bit about the cushion making process here.  I really enjoy making these cushions as they’re a great way to use up every last bit of wool, but best of all, I love working with natural fibres and transforming “scraps” into something useful and lovely.

This particular cushion is made from Pinkie’s fleece.  You can read up about Pinkie here.  Her fleece is really lovely with its darker colouring, typical of younger Coloured Ryeland sheep.

Unlike the more commonly known Ryeland sheep who are white, Coloured Ryelands come in all sorts of colours, usually on the browny-beige spectrum, they start off jet black in life as wee lambs and then gradually lighten up as they get older to eventually become silvery grey rather like us in fact!

Pinkie’s wool is not only pretty in colour it is also soft and very springy to the touch.  Ryeland wool is on the finer end of the spectrum with a micron count of only 30-32.  It has a zig zag crimp to the fibres which makes it very bouncy and insulating.  Lucky sheep, they certainly need that insulating quality here in Scotland!

The back of the Pinkie cushion is 100% linen.  You will notice there are two buttons on the back which allows you to remove the cover for washing, click here for washing tips:

Inside the cushion there’s an insert made of muslin which is stuffed with wool. This wool stuffing is boiled to remove the lanolin, then it is washed and rinsed several times until it’s really clean.  Once dry I sift through the wool and remove any bits of grass and hay etc.  Finally I add some drops of cedarwood essential oil which is a great natural moth repellent.

For washing info please click here, but don’t worry too much as I send out care notes with each cushion I make.
