Description

Just like the rugs I make, these cushions are 100% sheep-friendly, no sheep are harmed in the process of making them.  They are made from only felted wool which is then sewn onto a linen back.  They are very soft and cuddly, just like our sheep in fact!

To make these cushions I use up the left-over locks of wool from my rug making.

I’ve written a bit about the cushion making process here.  I really enjoy making cushions as they’re a great way to use up every last bit of wool, but best of all, I love working with natural fibres and transforming “scraps” into something useful and lovely.

This particular cushion is made from a beautiful and unusual fleece I got from our lovely neighbours across the valley at Craiglearan Farm who keep Cheviots.  You can read up about these fabulous sheep here:

You may be wondering why this cushion is grey when Cheviots are traditionally creamy-white. Well, this would be a good question and the answer is that while most Cheviots have lighter coloured wool, every so often a recessive gene pops up and a darker woolled sheep appears, seemingly out of nowhere.

These darker woolled Cheviots are very special and a reminder that early sheep were largely shades of brown, grey and black.  The creamy coloured sheep we see in abundance today only came about through many years of selective breeding, lighter wool being more desirable due to it being easier to dye.

But back to the cushion, not only is it cute with its pretty grey colouring, the wool is very soft, springy and fuzzy soft to the touch.  It is highly strokable with big “puffy” locks measuring 4 inches in length.  The wool is brushed which makes it even softer, (as a rule I don’t normally brush wool but some fleeces respond well and this was one of those).

The back of this cushion is made from 100% linen.  You will notice there are two buttons on the back which allows you to remove the cover for washing, click here for washing tips:

Inside the cushion there’s an insert made of muslin which is stuffed with wool. This wool stuffing is boiled to remove the lanolin, then it is washed and rinsed several times until it’s really clean.  Once dry I sift through it and remove any bits of grass and hay etc.  Finally I add some drops of cedarwood essential oil which is a great natural moth repellent.

For washing info please click here, but don’t worry too much as I send out care notes with each cushion I make.
